Our ceremony will be an intimate and personal view into our relationship and committment. While we won't give away the details, it is important to Kate that guests know how uniquely special the ceremony will be to her because of the officiant, Russell Weatherspoon. Seen in the photo above, taken in 1997, he has known Kate since she was 15-years-old when he was her JV basketball coach at Phillips Exeter Academy. Over her four years at Exeter they developed a close relationship and Mr. Weatherspoon, known as 'Spoon to Kate, became her mentor in basketball, school, relationships and life. Kate dated several boys in Mr. Weatherspoon's dormitory and he never shied from giving her his honest opinions of her romantic choices. Over their 18 year relationship, Mr. Weatherspoon has continued to counsel Kate and no matter where she was on the globe, he was always just an email away.
When she told him she had met Dan, and as their relationship blossomed, Mr. Weatherspoon said that she had never before been so confident about her choice and this confidence spoke volumes about the man he had yet to meet. Once they did meet, Mr. Weatherspoon was happy that he was not put in the position of trying to change her mind because he said it was obvious how much they loved each other.
Even before she got engaged, Kate knew she would ask Mr. Weatherspoon to perform her ceremony and she was touched and thrilled by his immediate and shared joy in being included. On her wedding day, Kate will be given away by her parents, but also by a man that has become a second father to her.
